Reading Help – 3 Things You Must Know to Get Help for Your Child
Before you spend any money or waste any more time you need to find the real reason your child is struggling to read. You know your child is capable, you have tried everything, but nothing is working, right?
25% of children in grades K-6 have difficulty with reading which is serious enough to impede learning." (American Public Health Association) Amazing isn’t it? The situation does not get better as students get older. A report from ACT, Inc. says barely half of high-school graduates are ready for college-level reading. ACT has also stated that work-readiness requires similar skills to college-readiness. (2005)
1) One out of four students (25%) will exhibit reading problems. Here are five symptoms (from a list of fifty) to look for: headaches, inaccurate letter/word recognition, a bright child who reads extremely slow, teary eyes, and difficulty staying on task. In most cases these problems can be helped and sometimes eliminated. Until you find the real reason these will cause stress for the child as well as yourself. Negative effects are poor self-esteem, lack of confidence, poor education, and continued struggle in life.
2) For your child’s reading evaluation you want the most accurate and up to date testing methods currently available, based on silent reading fluency and national standards. You also want this base line for future measurment of your child's progress. Why silent reading fluency? Because students are required to take more standardized tests than ever before, and all tests require students to have strong silent reading fluency skills. They must be able to read to themselves quickly, efficiently, and with good comprehension if they are going to succeed. All too often silent reading fluency is not emphasized, and as you are probably aware it is the goal.
3) You want a professional who is highly experienced in the most current testing techniques and use of the newest equipment available. You want a test which is based on scientific data, not subjective results (based only on the testers personal opinion). This is the 21st century and scientific advancements in reading improvement are amazing. Once you know the real reason your child is experiencing difficulty, you want to hear what can be done to address the real problem and who has the experience to get the results you want. In other words, what are your choices? Then you need to know how many grade levels in reading and vocabulary need to be completed, predicted time to reach these and the estimated cost.
