Why Do We Stress Silent Reading Fluency?

Students are required to take more standardized tests than ever before. No matter the subject or content, all tests require students to have strong silent reading fluency skills. Students need to be able to read to themselves quickly, efficiently and with good comprehension if they are going to succeed.

Twenty five percent of students in grades K-6 have visual problems that are serious enough to impede learning.” (American Public Health Association)  That means 1 student out of 4 in every classroom.

According to Put Reading First, “A recent large-scale study by the National Assessment of Educational Progress found that 44% of a representative sample of the nation’s fourth graders were low in fluency,” and those who scored lower on measures of fluency also scored lower on comprehension.

This situation does not improve significantly as students get older. According to Reading Between the Lines, a recent report from ACT, Inc., barely half of high-school graduates are ready for college-level reading. ACT has also stated that work-readiness requires similar skills to college-readiness.

Fluency can be difficult to address. Oral fluency can be easily assessed, but it is not a component of standardized testing. Silent reading fluency is a significant aspect of reading, but all too often it is not understood.  These skills are subliminal and cannot be directed by a teacher or controlled by a student and in the past it was difficult to assess.

Now Silent Reading Fluency can be measured quickly and easily beginning with the computerized Online Assessment.  I give this to your student via the web and the results are available immediately. Email me to schedule this comprehensive assessment which measures the reading level, comprehension percentile ,reading rate, and vocabulary level.  The scientifically measured results are based on National Standards.
